Sunless tanning is a safe alternative to natural tanning or a tanning bed.  An application, which comes in various forms, gel, lotion, mousse or a fine mist, produces effects in the skin which imitate a traditional tan.  According to the American Academy of Dermatology the most active ingredient in sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA).  It is not a dye, stain, or paint but a reaction between the top layers of your skin and the DHA.  It does not change the skin pigmentation or need UV exposure to initiate the reaction.  The reaction is non-toxic and temporary.  The effects will fade gradually over a 3 to 10 day period.

DHA has been approved by the FDA. Using DHA is also recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association.

Which method is best?

Two of the most popular methods for a professional spray tan are Mystic Tan and Magic Tan. These professional level application involve standing in an enclosed booth while a fine mist is sprayed over the entire body.  Professional spray tanning services are available at spas, tanning salons, and gyms.

Many common drug store brands like Neutrogena, Olay, Bain de Soleil, and L'Oreal offer a sunless tanning product.  There are different formulas available for face and body. Some products contain a bronzing agent which immediately shows a glimmer.

Department store brands offer their own line of similar sunless tanning products.  Clarins, Estee Lauder, Clinique, and Lancome are well known brands.  With both drug store and department store products you apply the product yourself in the privacy of your own bathroom.

Achieving complete coverage may be difficult applying the product to yourself.  The advantage of the professional systems is the quick process, sometimes as little as 30 seconds and the total body coverage.

Allow all products to completely dry before dressing.  Thoroughly wash with soap and dry hands, particularly between fingers and around nail cuticles to avoid staining.  Any areas that are too dark can be lightened by scrubbing with an exfoliating glove.

If you buy your tanning bed or tanning salon equipment from a large manufacturer, you must pay their overhead, rent, salaries, advertising expense, sales commission, etc.  As you may have discovered, not many tanning bed distributors or manufacturers actually list their tanning salon equipment prices on their website.  One great company that does is American Quality MFG and you may click here for an example of their work which is pictured below.
